Washington, DC – The American Meat Institute (AMI) released a new consumer brochure about animal welfare in the meat industry this month.

The brochure is designed to inform consumers about voluntary welfare efforts and federal welfare requirements.

The brochure will be made available electronically to retailers and restaurant chains wishing to add logos and distribute to consumers inquiring about treatment of food animals by supplier meat companies. AMI will distribute copies of the brochure to consumers who contact the institute about animal welfare. Packers and processors also are
encouraged to use the brochure with their customers and consumers.

"This industry has a well-documented commitment to enhancing animal
welfare," said AMI Vice President of Public Affairs Janet Riley. "We are proud to provide consumers with the details of those efforts through this new brochure."
