Cattle Ranch Of The Week: Bock Charolais

The Bock Charolais Ranch is located on the eastern edge of the North Dakota Badlands. Bock Charolais Ranch is owned and operated by Ron and Judy Bock and their son Loren. In this setting, 230 Purebred Charolais beef cows are raised on the rolling prairies and badlands of southwestern North Dakota.

Ron first saw Charolais in the early 1960s when his uncle brought Charolais cattle from Texas and Missouri. Ron’s dad appreciated the advantages of the Charolais breed and soon was crossbreeding his commercial cowherd using Charolais bulls, with great success. When his uncle decided to retire, Ron purchased the registered Charolais cattle and eventually the ranch.

The Bock Charolais Ranch breeds its cow herd to the sires that best fit the needs of commercial cattlemen. They want bulls that produce easy calving, fast growing calves that are physically sound. Our cowherd is docile, has the feet and legs to travel long distances, and raise a calf every year. We utilize Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer to advance the genetics of our herd.

Loren returned to the ranch after attaining a bachelor’s degree in Ag Systems Management with a minor in Animal Science from NDSU. His knowledge and experience are at great addition to the operation.

Our older son Eric is also involved in the operation through his expertise in animal nutrition. He has a bachelor’s degree in Animal and Range Science from NDSU and works as a nutrition consultant for CHS Nutrition.
