Fending off a possible judicial order, the Cattlemen's Beef Board has made a communication policy change, with regard to releases paid for by checkoff funds.

Judge Charles B. Kornmann provided a preliminary ruling that some of the words used by CBB were “opinion” and should not be used in checkoff funded material.

“Although a written order has not yet been issued, we understand the intent of the ruling to mean that statements such as ‘The program is fair because everyone pays’ has been determined by Judge Kornmann to be a statement of opinion,” said Monte Reese, Cattlemen's Beef Board chief operating officer.

"We've always tried to base our producer communications activities on fact, but we will increase our efforts to convey information that is supported by documented evidence.”
