Consumer confidence jumped sharply during May, according to The Conference Board, the industry group that compiles the index. Although still low by historic standards, the new index figure of 54.9 is up from 40.8 in April, potentially a good sign for beef demand. The May index is the highest since September 2008, when it stood at 61.4. Several other indicators the group measures also showed improvement during May.
