Last week, Maine Gov. John Baldacci signed legislation preventing two livestock production confinement methods. The legislation was strongly supported by the Humane Society of the United States.

Effective Jan. 1, 2011, the new law will prohibit gestation crates for sows and veal crates for calves. LD 1021 was sponsored by Sen. John Nutting (D-AndroscogginCounty), Senate chair of the Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Committee. It passed the committee and both chambers unanimously.

The legislation is similar to legislation already passed in California, Florida, Arizona, Colorado and Oregon.
