A much-publicized survey from Consumer Reports demonstrates that customer service and quality are still important draws for grocery shoppers. Discount supermarkets, including Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest retailer, were near the bottom of the list when it came to the quality of their service and fresh meat and produce. Consumer Reports surveyed 32,599 shoppers about their experiences shopping for groceries during the past year. Wegmans and Whole Foods were given good reviews for their meat and produce, and Wegmans, Trader Joe’s and Raley’s were said to offer good service.

The complete ratings for 59 chains will appear in Consumer Reports’ May issue and can also be accessed online at www.consumerreports.org.
