PHOENIX (AP) — Southern Arizona ranchers say families are being terrorized by smugglers on the border and more cell phone towers could be the difference between life and death.

Arizona's border with Mexico is incredibly desolate in places.

Rancher Don Kimble said riding the range can mean sometimes going miles without seeing a single soul.

Ranchers say a cell phone is a lifeline for cattle growers who confront illegal immigrants, drug runners and smugglers.

Rancher Robert Krentz was found shot to death March 27 on his ranch near Douglas.

Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard said evidence at the scene appears consistent with the known behavior of drug runners working for cartels based in Mexico.
