Colorado Cattle on Feed down 11 percent

The number of cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Colorado feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or larger was estimated at 1,010,000 head as of February 1, 2013. The latest inventory was up 1 percent from January 1, 2013 but down 11 percent from February 1, 2012 .

Cattle feeders with 1,000 head or larger capacity marketed an estimated 1 75 ,000 head of fed cattle during January 201 3 , up 1 3 percent from the Decembe r 201 2 marketings of 1 55 ,000 head but down 8 percent from a year ago .

An estimated 190 ,000 cattle and calves were placed on feed during January 201 3 , no change from a year ago but up 36 percent above the December 2 01 2 placements of 1 4 0 ,000. Of the number placed in January, 16 percent weighed less than 600 pounds, 2 4 percent weighed from 600 to 699 pounds, 32 percent weighed from 700 to 799 pounds, and 2 9 percent weighed 800 pounds and greater. Other disappearance for January was estimated at 5 ,000 head, no change from last month but down 5,000 head from last year.
