WASDE lowers 2012 beef-production forecast, raises prices
This month’s World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) from USDA indicate U.S. beef supplies will shrink even further this year than previously expected. Beef imports will pick up, according to the projections, but not enough to account for lower production and continued strong exports.

According to the USDA's latest WASDE report, the 2012 forecast of total meat and poultry production is raised from last month as higher broiler and turkey production is expected to more than offset lower forecast beef production.

Total red meat supplies in freezers were up 5 percent from the previous month and up 12 percent from last year.

Texas Cattle on Feed up 14 percent
Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 2.9 million head on September 1, up 14 percent from a year ago. According to the monthly report released by the Texas Field Office, the estimate was 2 percent higher than the revised August 1 level.

Idaho Cattle on Feed up 3 percent
Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Idaho from feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head on September 1, 2011 totaled 195,000 head, up 3 percent from the previous year, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. The cattle on feed inventory was unchanged from August 1, 2011.

Oklahoma Cattle on Feed up 3 percent
The Oklahoma inventory of cattle on feed for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head, totaled 365 thousand head on September 1, 2011, up 1 percent from the previous month and up 3 percent from September 1, 2010.

Nebraska Cattle on Feed down 2 percent
Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 2.01 million cattle on feed on September 1, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office. The inventory was down 2 percent from last year.

Kansas Cattle on Feed up 1 percent
The number of cattle on feed on September 1, 2011 in Kansas feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity totaled 2.21 million head, up less than 1 percent from last year and up 1 percent from August 1, 2011. Placements during August totaled 520,000 head, down 15 percent from a year ago and down 10 percent from July 2011 placements of 580,000 head.
