U.S. cattle imports for 2011 are forecast at 2.05 million head—10 percent lower than 2010. Canadian cattle imports through September, however , are 40 percent lower, year-over-year.

Texas Cattle on Feed up 14 percent
Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 2.9 million head on September 1, up 14 percent from a year ago. According to the monthly report released by the Texas Field Office, the estimate was 2 percent higher than the revised August 1 level.

Idaho Cattle on Feed up 3 percent
Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Idaho from feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head on September 1, 2011 totaled 195,000 head, up 3 percent from the previous year, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. The cattle on feed inventory was unchanged from August 1, 2011.

Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 2.01 million cattle on feed on September 1, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office. The inventory was down 2 percent from last year.

Kansas Cattle on Feed up 1 percent
The number of cattle on feed on September 1, 2011 in Kansas feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity totaled 2.21 million head, up less than 1 percent from last year and up 1 percent from August 1, 2011. Placements during August totaled 520,000 head, down 15 percent from a year ago and down 10 percent from July 2011 placements of 580,000 head.

The number of cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Colorado feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or larger was estimated at 990,000 head as of September 1, 2011. The latest inventory was up 11 percent from September 1, 2010, and up 2 percent from the previous month.
