USDA lowers beef production forecast

According to the USDA's latest WASDE report, the 2012 forecast of total meat and poultry production is raised from last month as higher broiler and turkey production is expected to more than offset lower forecast beef production. FULL STORY »

More heifers in feedyards

Last Friday’s Cattle on Feed report shows feedyard inventories as of February 1st up 2 percent from a year ago. Placements during January were down 2 percent and January marketings were up 2 percent from those during January, 2011. Somewhat surprisingly, the report lists the number of heifers on feed in operations with capacity for 1,000 head or more at 4.5 million head, up 6 percent from a year ago. FULL STORY »

According to the Kansas Agricultural Statics release of their state's Cattle on Feed report, the number of cattle on feed on February 1, 2012 in Kansas feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity totaled 2.23 million head, down 2 percent from a year ago and down 1 percent from January 1, 2012.
