Kansas Cattle on Feed down 4 percent

The number of cattle on feed on May 1, 2012 in Kansas feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity totaled 2.08 million head, down 4 percent from both a year ago and April 1, 2012. This is the lowest May 1 inventory since 1999.

Placements during April totaled 300,000 head, down 21 percent from April 2011 and down 20 percent from March 2012. This is the lowest April placements since 1994 and tied with May 1996 for the lowest monthly placements since June 1994. Marketings during April totaled 380,000 head, down 1 percent from April 2011 and down 4 percent from March 2012. This is the lowest April marketings since 1995.

Other disappearance was 10,000 head, down 5,000 head from a year ago but unchanged from the previous month. The percent of April placements by weight was: under 600 pounds, 20 percent; 600-699 pounds, 18 percent; 700-799 pounds, 28 percent; and 800 pounds or heavier, 34 percent.
