Kansas Cattle on Feed down 6 percent

The number of cattle on feed on January 1, 2013 in Kansas feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity totaled 2.11 million head, down 6 percent from a year ago and down 4 percent from December 1, 2012. Placements during December totaled 365,000 head, up 4 percent from a year ago but down 3 percent from November 2012.

Marketings during December totaled 425,000 head, down 4 percent from December 2011 but up 9 percent from November 2012. Other disappearance was 20,000 head, up 5,000 head from a year and the previous month. The percent of December placements by weight was: under 600 pounds, 19 percent; 600-699 pounds, 27 percent; 700-799 pounds, 29 percent; and 800 pounds or heavier, 25 percent.
