The number of cattle on feed on March 1, 2012 in Kansas feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity totaled 2.20 million head, down 1 percent from both a year ago and February 1, 2012.
This is the lowest March inventory since 1999. Placements during February totaled 370,000 head, up 1 percent from February 2011 but down 10 percent from January 2012. Marketings during February totaled 385,000 head, down 5 percent from February 2011 and down 7 percent from January 2012.
Other disappearance was 15,000 head, down 5,000 from a year ago but unchanged from the previous month. The percent of February placements by weight was: under 600 pounds, 19 percent; 600-699 pounds, 20 percent; 700-799 pounds, 35 percent; and 800 pounds or heavier, 26 percent.
