Texas Cattle on Feed down 10 percent

Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 2.70 million head on December 1, 2012, down 10 percent from a year ago. According to the monthly report released by the Texas Field Office, the estimate was up 1 percent from the November 1 level. Producers placed 465 thousand head in commercial feedlots during November, down 1 percent from a year ago but up 3 percent from last month.

Texas commercial feeders marketed 415 thousand head during November, down 8 percent from 2011 and down 6 percent from last month.

On December 1, there were 2.34 million head of cattle and calves on feed in the Northern High Plains, 87 percent of the state's total. The number on feed across the area was down 8 percent from last year, but up 1 percent from the November 1 total.

November placements in the Northern High Plains totaled 410 thousand head, up 4 percent from the October total. Marketings were down 6 percent from last month to 364 thousand head.
