Texas Cattle on Feed down 7 percent

Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 2.43 million head on September 1, 2013, down 7 percent from a year ago.

According to the monthly report released by the Texas Field Office, the estimate was down 2 percent from the August 1, 2013 level. Producers placed 450 thousand head in commercial feedlots during August, down 9 percent from a year ago and down 2 percent from July.

Texas commercial feeders marketed 495 thousand head during August, down 3 percent from 2012 and down 5 percent from July. On September 1, there were 2.09 million head of cattle and calves on feed in the Northern High Plains, 86 percent of the state's total.

The number on feed across the area was down 8 percent from last year and down 3 percent from the August 1 total.

August placements in the Northern High Plains totaled 394 thousand head, down 3 percent from the July total. Marketings were down 4 percent from last month to 449 thousand head.
