Cattle Outlook: Cattle futures prices trending lower in 2013
The USDA is now predicting combined red meat and poultry production will 0.4% greater than in 2012. In December they were predicting meat and poultry production would be 2.6% lower this year than last.

Cattle Outlook: USDA report shows fewer U.S. cattle farms
USDA's February cattle on feed report had few surprises. The number of cattle placed on feed in January was up 1.6% from a year ago. This was the first time placements have been above year-earlier since May.

Cattle Outlook: Weekly slaughter falls from previous week, year
The average price of choice beef at retail during January was $5.244 per pound, a new record. This was up 12.6 cents from December, up 15.1 cents from January 2012, and up 9.2 cents from the November 2012 record.

Cattle Outlook: Live cattle imports rise in 2012
Last year, the U.S. exported 2.45 billion pounds of beef and imported 2.22 billion pounds. Although down 11.9% from the year before, 2012 beef exports were the fourth highest yearly total ever behind 2011, 2003, and 2000.

USDA's February WASDE report was not encouraging. They are now predicting that 2013 beef production will be only 3.2% lower than last year.

USDA's January cattle inventory report said the number of cattle and calves in the U.S. at the start of the year totaled 89.3 million head.

Cattle Outlook: Calf crop likely to fall for 18th year in a row
It appears that Japan may be about to loosen their restriction on U.S. beef imports. The age restriction is expected to change soon to cattle slaughtered at 30 months of age or less. That should boost our beef shipments to Japan.

Cattle Outlook: Feeder prices stronger at start of 2013
Beef carcass cutout values were mixed this week. On Friday morning, the choice boxed beef carcass cutout value was $194.22/cwt, down 60 cents from last Friday, but up $10 from a year ago.

Cattle Outlook: Cattle prices likely to set more records in 2013
Beef production in 2012 was the lowest since 2005 and 2013 beef production is expected to be down another 5% or so. Production is likely to decline again in 2014. The per capita beef supply in 2013 is expected to be the lowest since 1952.

Cattle Outlook: Fewer cattle in feedlots, record high for beef
USDA's cattle on feed report said there were 6.0% fewer cattle in large feedlots than on December 1, 2011. November placements were down 5.6% while marketings were down 0.7%. The on-feed number is 0.6% above pre-release trade forecasts.
