Cattle Outlook: Producers delay sending cattle to market
Last week was another week with little or no improvement in pasture conditions. Some producers are nearing a breaking point when it comes to being forced to send cows to market due to a lack of feed, while others are continuing to hold out hope for some fall pasture growth to prevent a large liquidation.

The July Cattle on Feed report said placements were down 1.8% in June while marketings were down 6.1%, largely due to one fewer slaughter day this June than last.

Cattle Outlook: Cattle, beef prices lower while corn futures soar
Retail beef prices declined for the third consecutive month during June. The average price of beef in grocery stores during June was $4.932 per pound, down 3.3 cents from May, but up 12.3 cents from June 2011.

Cattle Outlook: Dry conditions push feed prices higher quickly
Fed cattle prices were a bit higher this week on very light volume. Through Thursday, the 5-area average price for slaughter steers sold on a live weight basis was $117.05/cwt, up 56 cents from last week and up $2.53/cwt from the same week last year. Steer prices on a dressed basis averaged $187.67/cwt this week, up $3.52 from a week ago and up $5.21 from a year ago.

The beef carcass cutout value was lower this week. On Friday morning, the choice boxed beef carcass cutout value was $196.90/cwt, down $1.68 from the previous Friday.

Cattle Outlook: April beef exports surpass 200 million pounds
April beef exports were over 200 million pounds, the first time this level has been eclipsed in 2012. Imports were slightly higher than this however, the third month of the past four where the U.S. was a net importer of beef.
