Probably not surprising, but most AI breeders find that nervous, excitable cows tend to have lower preg rates when AI bred. That’s why the portable breeding barn is such a hit with those who use it. Cows go in it readily and stay calm while in it. Now a University of Florida study on natural mating out in the pasture reveals the temperamental cows may even get excited when they see the bull coming. At least in a two-year trial, cows did show a lower probability of pregnancy as their temperament scores worsened even in the pasture.

Their results suggest that excitable temperament and elevated cortisol concentrations are detrimental to the reproductive function of the cow. All the more reason to strive to cull those nervous cows from your herd.
