   This week in Lancaster County, slaughter steer and heifer receipts were 
heavier this week as normal slaughter schedules resumed following the Easter 
Holiday. Sales early in the week were steady to 1.00 lower but strengthened 
on Thursday and finished 2.00-3.00 higher than last week. These higher 
prices toward the end of the week mirror the trade in Chicago, despite lower 
beef cutout prices April Live cattle limited up on Thursday to finish at 
121.75/cwt. Commodities and stocks alike seemed to ride the wave of investor 
enthusiasm on Thursday. News of better than expected demand at an Italian 
bond auction eased some Euro-zone fears Thursday coupled with talk that 
economic growth in China may top previous forecasts. With this higher than 
expected growth potential, the Chinese have become very aggressive in their 
corn purchases as they recently purchased an additional 2.4 million bushels 
of American old crop corn, to add to their total of 4 million metric tons 
that they have already purchased this season. Also, soybean demand is up so 
far as commitments to purchase are already 92% higher than the USDA's 
forecasts for the 2011 marketing year. With this increase in demand it is 
good to know that a mild winter and early spring has led to many farmers in 
the region and nationally already to begin early planting. According to 
USDA, as of Sunday 7% of the nation's corn has already been planted with 
Texas leading the way at 55% already planted. Recent rains in the lone star 
state have eased some of the symptoms of what was one of the driest years on 
record. This additional moisture is much needed down south and comes as a 
welcome surprise to many of the ranchers that plan on herd expansion this 
year. Estimates of heifers being held for beef cow replacement numbered 
5.212 million nationally on January 1 which is 1.4% higher than one year 
earlier. This figure marks the first time since 2006 we have seen an 
increase in the number of heifers retained as replacements. Despite the 
recent drop in beef demand due to the "LFTB" uproar, cattle and beef prices 
are still either at or near all-time highs, and the tightest cattle supplies 
since the 1950's have analysts predicting a general rise in prices into the 
foreseeable future. Cutout values as of Thursday are 176.70/cwt for Choice 
and 176.76/cwt for Select with the spread in favor of Select by .06. Live 
cattle futures for April closed at 121.375/cwt up 3.00/cwt from Wednesday: 
June at 117.550/cwt up 2.50/cwt: and December at 128.450/cwt up 1.825/cwt. 
All cattle markets are priced per cwt with exception of dairy cattle 
purchased on a per head basis.

    Calf Summary: This week in Lancaster County, Holstein Bull calves sold 
steady on Monday and advanced 20.00-25.00 on Tuesday and were 30.00-40.00 
higher late in the week. Demand was moderate in early week trades and very 
good at the end of the week. This week`s composite veal carcass values for 
the Northeast United States were quoted from 350.00-380.00 (Hide-off), with

   When compared to last Wednesday's sale, all classes of cows and heifers 
sold firm with good demand. Wednesday's supply included 121 fresh milking 
cows, 35 short-bred cows, 17 springing cows, 249 short-bred heifers, 151 
springing heifers, 216 open heifers, and 26 bulls. One hundred percent of 
reported supply Holsteins unless otherwise noted. All sales sold on a per 
head basis.
