Compared to last week, steers under 400 lbs sold mostly steady, 450-500
lbs sold 6.00 lower, over 500 lbs sold 2.00 to 4.00 lower. Heifers sold 2.00
to 3.00 lower. Most declines were noted on sales before Friday, end of the
week sales sold higher (compared to last week) than early week sales.
Demand was moderate to mostly good for all offerings. This was the first week in
a very long time where a the bulk of the receipts included heifers. Some were
quoted as replacements but the bulk went to feed yards. Supply this week included
52 percent heifers, 47 percent steers with the balance on bull calves. Near 74
percent of the feeders weighed over 600 lbs.
**Bottom of report** Burwell and Valentine livestock markets held special
bred heifer and cow auctions with several dispersals. Near 2300 head of top
quality Sandhills females sold at these two auctions. Most offering would calve
in Feb/Mar some Apr and most were bred to Black bulls, some to red and white face
bulls. There were a couple of dispersals that had black momma cows that were bred
to Charolais bulls and they were really sought after. Most cows stayed within the
region some going out of state.
