California Hay Report



   Compared to last week: Prices traded mostly steady in most areas.  Demand 

remained very good in all regions on active trading activity.  The supply of hay 

in California is very tight as all regions are in full production.  Region 6 is 

facing the summer heat and quality of hay is dropping.  All prices reported FOB 

at the stack or barn unless otherwise noted. Regions are defined at bottom of 

report.

Sierra, Nevada, Placer, Yolo, El Dorado, Solano, Sacramento, Amador, and 

Alpine.  

Region 3: Northern San Joaquin Valley: San Joaquin, Calaveras, Stanislaus, 

Tuolumne, Mono, Merced, Mariposa. 

Region 4: Central San Joaquin Valley: Madera, Fresno, Kings, Tulare, and 

Inyo. 

Region 5: Southern California: Kern, Northeast Los Angeles, and Western San 

Bernardino.   

Region 6: Southeast California: Eastern San Bernardino, Riverside, and 

Imperial.



Alfalfa hay test guidelines, (for domestic livestock use and not more than 

10% grass), used with visual appearance and intent of sale Quantitative 

factors are approximate and many factors can affect feeding value.

   ADF = Acid Detergent Fiber; NDF = Neutral Detergent Fiber; RFV = Relative 

Feed Value; TDN = Total Digestible nutrients. RFV calculated using the 

Wis/Minn formula.  TDN calculated using the western formula. Values based on 

100% dry matter, TDN both 90% and 100%.
