Weekly East River South Dakota Hay Market
All prices per ton, unless noted, FOB the stack.
Compared to last week: Alfalfa hay mostly steady. Good demand remains
for higher quality hay, which in most cases this year is second cutting
of which little has been sold as growers are working on finishing up the
baling of. Light demand for low quality alfalfa suitable for grinding, which
is much more readily available. Much improved weather allowed for putting
up high quality second cutting, as opposed to the first cut which in some
areas received many inches of rain on or it stood in the field and reached
a higher level of maturity than desirable. Good demand for high quality
grass hay. Good inquiry is being reported by livestock producers looking
for straw. All hay and straw sold by the ton FOB, unless otherwise noted.
