WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Officials say a plan to boost local food production in Iowa could lead to more jobs and income for Iowa farmers.

The Iowa Local Food & Farm Plan presented Thursday outlines 34 recommendations that have been compiled as part of a directive from the 2010 Iowa Legislature to develop a local food plan for Iowa.

The plan was compiled by the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University along with several other groups and agencies.

Only two recommendations ask for state money, including funds for a state coordinator for one year and for the state's farm to school program. The center's associate director Rich Pirog says other funds could be raised through the sale of license plates, posters and bumper stickers to help implement other recommendations.
