Japan removes ban on beef from Tyson’s Illinois plant

Preventive measures taken by one of Tyson’s meat-processing plants convinced Japan’s agriculture and health ministries to lift a ban on imports from the plant set late last year.

The ban on beef from the Hillsdale factory of Tyson Fresh Meats Inc. was set last October after meat from the plant failed to meet Japan’s requirements. The Japan Times reports the Hillsdale plant now uses special containers for meat exported to Japan.

Japan only imports U.S. beef from cows under 20 months or younger but the country is expected to allow beef from cows under 30 months of age beginning sometime this year.
