USMEF: Will trade negotiations with EU benefit U.S. red meat?

The Obama Administration has formally notified Congress that it will soon enter negotiations on a comprehensive trade agreement with the European Union. In the attached audio report, Thad Lively, U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) senior vice president for trade access, offers insights on what this could mean for the U.S. red meat industry.

The United States currently has some access to the European Union for both beef and pork, but product restrictions and other trade barriers are quite significant. While it will not be easy to gain relief from these obstacles, Lively says comprehensive trade negotiations may offer a more promising path for the U.S. meat industry than past situations in which agricultural trade barriers were addressed in isolation.
