Building upon an initial investment of $8.7 million, researchers and beef industry experts will use a $14 million investment to enhance Canada’s beef industry through improved beef quality, food safety and animal health.

A group of industry experts, scientists and universities will collaborate to make Canada’s beef sector more competitive. Research will focus on improving beef quality and food safety; animal health and welfare, including detection and prevention of animal disease; feed production and efficiency; as well as environmental sustainability.

The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association President Martin Unrau is looking forward to the production efficiencies resulting from the research to allow cattle producers to produce more beef with fewer resources.

Results from an earlier investment made through Growing Forward found cattle producers practicing swath grazing corn or triticale during winter months could reduce their total feeding costs by 27 to 45 percent. The release noted a one percent savings in total winter feeding costs saves the sector $6 million annually.

"The research objectives of the Beef Cattle Industry Science Cluster under Growing Forward 2 will build on the successes of the first cluster and further improve efficiencies that enhance the overall sustainability of Canada's beef cattle industry," Unrau said.

The investment in science and innovation was announced Tuesday by Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, and Blake Richards, Member of Parliament for Wild Rose. Money will be given to the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association.

The investment is supported by the Harper Government.
