Mile High Night sale raises $61,000 for Hereford Youth

KANSAS CITY, Mo. —With the sales of the Foundation Female and three embryo packages, $61,000 was raised to benefit the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) Friday, Jan. 18, to a packed stadium during the record-breaking Mile High Night Hereford Sale in Denver during the National Western Stock Show.

Starting the sale was the Lot 1 Foundation Female donated by Tennessee River Music Inc., Ft. Payne, Ala. The CS Boomer 29F daughter, TRM 6104 Lulu 2044 ET, was purchased by the Dave McMahon family of Belle Point Ranch, Ft. Smith, Ark., for $30,000.

“The Owen and McMahon families have been huge supporters of HYFA for several years and we applaud them for their continuous commitments to Hereford youth,” says Amy Cowan, American Hereford Association youth and foundation director. “The Hereford Youth Foundation of America would not be nearing the $2-million mark without the support of Tennessee River Music Inc. and Belle Point Ranch.”

Lots 38A and 38B generated another $28,000 for two embryo packages and guaranteed pregnancies by national champion females LCC Two Timin 438 ET and TCC Ms Diana 01 donated by Bushy Park Farm, Mitchell, S.D., and Tucker Cattle Co., North Platte, Neb. Sullivan Farms, Dunlap, Iowa, helped support the Foundation and added some superior genetics to its herd with this purchase.

T-Bone Ranch, Antonito, Colo., donated another embryo package that sold for $2,400 to Tejkl Show Cattle, Stanton, Neb.

That brought the total for the night to $60,400 to benefit the Hereford Youth Foundation of America.

“We couldn't be more excited with what the embryo packages at the Mile High Night generated for the next generation,” Cowan says. “Coming from operations built around youth, we appreciate the investment these programs have made to scholarship and education for tomorrow’s Hereford youth.”

Mile High Night Hereford Sale Grosses $666,925

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ­­­— It was a full house in the new venue for the Mile High Night Hereford Sale, Jan. 18, at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver.  Moving to the stadium floor seemed to take the sale up another notch, almost doubling in gross sales from last year.

The Hereford offering was again top-notch and the bidding proved it. When Eddie Sims, National Cattle Services Inc., silenced the gavel for the final time, $666,925 was spent. The bull average was up about $6,000 to $47,109.16 and 21 females commanded $10,157 per head, which is about $2,000 more than last year. Four flushes brought $6,437.50 per flush, also, and 25 embryos averaged $701.

Topping the sale at a remarkable $120,000 was Lot 3, half-interest and half-possession in WORR Owen Tankeray Y79D ET who the day before was name reserve grand champion polled bull. He is an Oct. 6, 2011, son of NJW FHF 9710 Tank 45P and was also named reserve champion at the American Royal and the North American International Livestock Shows. The Tankeray Group, Mason, Texas, was the buyer and Worrell Enterprises, Owen Bros. and J Bar L Cattle were the consignors.

The second high seller was Lot 4, Perks 144U Right Track 2040, a Feb. 15, 2012, son of TH 75J 243R Bailout 144U ET consigned by the Perks Ranch, Rockford, Ill. The Right Track Group, Rockford, Ill., paid $101,500 for half-interest, half-possession on this herd sire prospect. Right Track was selected polled junior bull calf champion in the bull show on Thursday.

As is always the case, the pick of Ned and Jan Ward’s heifers was a highly sought after lot, bringing $40,500 from Blairs. Ag Cattle Co., Lanigan, Saskatchewan. Lot 16 was the pick of any heifer from the 2013 calf crop from Ned and Jan Ward’s herd located near Sheridan, Wyo.
