Yep even then everyone wanted to be angus .... or at least Black hided which is why today you can't tell if an animal on the hoof is Angus or Shorthorn, Simmental, Limousine or Gelbvih with out a blood test. Sometimes your marketing can be so successful you create imitation to the point of losing your differentiation.
A better point might be that the quailty of the steer appears to have been irrelevant. The best steer in the show that year wasn't an Angus, but he needed to be colored like one to be considered worthy. Says way more about breed bias and perception. If a non-Angus steer wins the Angus show, what's that say about the real Angus?
