Kansas cattle on feed up 1 percent

The number of cattle on feed on February 1, 2011 in Kansas feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity totaled 2.27 million head, up 1 percent from a year ago but down less than 1 percent from January 1, 2011.

Placements during January totaled 435,000 head, down 8 percent from January 2010 but up 6 percent from December 2010. Marketings during January totaled 435,000 head, down 8 percent from January 2010 and down 9 percent from December 2010.

Other disappearance was 10,000 head, unchanged from both a year ago and the previous month. The percent of January placements by weight was: under 600 pounds, 13 percent; 600-699 pounds, 27 percent; 700-799 pounds, 38 percent; and 800 pounds or heavier, 22 percent.
