Heat wave kills as many as 4,000 cattle last week in Iowa

The Des Moines Register reports the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association estimates cattle deaths between 3,400 and 4,000 due to last week’s hot temperatures which climbed as high as 110 degrees.

The losses were estimated by polling the association’s members. As many as 3,000 cattle died in eastern Iowa where the heat was paired with limited rainfall. The week started with hot weather, but cooled slightly before rain eased conditions over the weekend.

Cattle producers who have lost animals may qualify to receive assistance through the Livestock Indemnity Program and should contact local USDA FSA offices to record their losses.

Long-term effects of the heat will be clearer in the fall when pregnancy checks begin. Cattle are in the middle of breeding season and the heat lowers fertility in bulls and difficulty in early pregnancy for cows and heifers. The adverse breeding conditions could hurt cattle supplies which are already expected to be low in 2012.
