A Lee County hog operation was sued by the state of Iowa last week, according to the Des Moines Register. The law suit was filed after investigators found evidence that the business misapplied manure last year. In addition, the state alleges the operation repeatedly failed to file manure-management plans.

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller filed the lawsuit Monday against Pieper Inc., citing the firm's history of multiple environmental violations over several years. The farm is a few miles northeast of Fort Madison, in the unincorporated community of Wever.

The operation consists of a 7,100-hog gestation, farrowing and finishing operation and a 1,300-hog nursery operation, contained in 10 buildings. Manure storage is in below-building pits and a large slurry tank.

Iowa contends that Pieper had spread hog manure with an irrigation gun, and the manure ran into a drainage ditch.
