An Iowa farmer who had spent some time in the hospital in the fall of 2012 did a head count and discovered 27 of his animals were missing.

The cattle disappeared sometime between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31. The theft is a challenging case due to the wide time frame and a lack of evidence. The Ottumwa Courier reports cattle were stolen from a fenced area. The Wapello County sheriff’s department contacted local sale barns but has been unable to generate any leads.

The cattle are mostly black, but some have black and white faces.

The 27 animals are valued at a total of $22,950.
