June Producer Profile: Dave Edmiston, Texas
Dave Edmiston called me while I was sitting next to a cattle trailer in the middle of Iowa. I was wondering why the tractor pulling it was festooned with a cartoon image of a flaming pig, but then I was in the middle of Iowa. I asked Dave how long his family had been in the cattle business. He had two answers. He could trace his family back to the ‘Old Three Hundred,’ the original band of Texas settlers who received land grants in Stephen F. Austin's first colony. That hardy group of intrepid souls settled in central Texas in the 1820s and brought 30 head of cattle.
Get to know Dave here in his interview with Cattlenetwork’s Chuck Jolley.

FMD Cross Species Group
The Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) Cross-Species Communication Team, which includes representatives from the beef checkoff, the National Pork Board, Dairy Management, Inc., American Sheep Industry and the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, recently hosted an information webinar. These groups continue to collaborate and provide the unified livestock industry response, if there were to be an FMD outbreak in the United States. Protein Consumption Patterns at Home
A checkoff-funded study was conducted to analyze in-home protein consumption. The study looked at beef vs. chicken in terms of frequency of consumption, typical weekday dinners vs. weekend meals, where consumers shop for beef and monthly expenditures for meat and beef. The study found that ground beef is the mainstay of weekday dinner meals with slightly more consumers saying they eat ground beef than chicken breasts during the week, except for Millennials.
