2012 Build a Better Burger Winner Announced! 

Erin Evenson was the big winner of $100,000 for her recipe of the 7 Train Caramelized Green Curry Burger with Crispy Watercress Salad, Roasted Cashews, and Minted Basil Aioli. Here is what Erin said about her inspiration: The number 7 subway train to the neighborhood of Woodside in Queens is better known in my Brooklyn apartment as "The Crispy Watercress Express." The best salad I have ever had resides there, combining peppery battered and fried watercress, a hot tangy dressing, and roasted cashews. Read more here.

Feel Full With Beef

In mid-April, 370 Registered Dietitians from across the country met in Indianapolis for the Weight Management Practice Group symposium, where they heard from beef protein satiety researcher Heather Leidy, PhD, and weight management expert Molly Gee, MEd, RD, LD. An hour-long educational session, funded by the beef checkoff, focused on the impact of “feeling full” on weight management, and elevated the high-quality protein in lean beef as a solution.

Previous checkoff-funded research conducted by Leidy, suggests that eating a protein-rich breakfast, such as one including high-quality proteins like beef and eggs, boosts fullness and reduces hunger and brain responses involved with food cravings more than a typical ready-to-eat breakfast cereal that is lower in protein.

We’re gaining steam steadily in social-media circles – with more nearly 5,000 followers of the page; a friends-of-fans reach of more than 2 million people; and a weekly reach last week of nearly 38,000 people!

On this page, our producer communications program reaches out to producers and importers across the country to share exciting news about checkoff results with social-media-savvy cattlemen and women and to encourage them to share it further. Current research indicates that about 16.1 percent of our producer Facebook fan base are between 25 and 34 years old; with another 15.1 percent falling between 35-44 years of age; 12.1 percent between 45 and 54 years old; and 7.4 percent between 55 and 64. On the outer edges, 0.8 percent are between 13 and 17 years old, and 3.5 percent are 65 years old or older. Females make up about 62.8 percent of the fan base on the producer page, while 36.4 percent are men.

Inner Chef “Re-Vealed”

The Beef Checkoff Program, through a partnership between The New York Beef Industry Council, the Pennsylvania Beef Council and the Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative (NEBPI) challenged consumers in 11 states and more than 800 retail stores to “Re-Veal Their Inner Chef” by encouraging them to submit a veal recipe at www.RevealYourInnerChefContest.com  from April 1 to April 30, 2013.

The “Re-Veal Your Inner Chef” recipe contest consisted of on-pack labeling, developed by Streetmarc Advertising, Marketing and Promotions of Westport, Conn., and placed on veal packages by packers and retailers. The labels boasted the 2010 winning recipe, rules and regulations. Six (6) finalist recipes were chosen and cooked off at an independent kitchen where judges determined the winner. The winner of the 2013 “Re-Veal Your Inner Chef” recipe contest by a unanimous vote was Donna Ryan of Topsfield, Mass., with her Pesto Caprese Veal Cutlets.
