May was a dry month over much of the Plains region, although locally heavy rains helped southwest Nebraska, southeast Nebraska and northeast Kansas. The region is 5 to 6 inches below normal rainfall. Drought is beginning in eastern Nebraska, western Iowa and eastern South Dakota. Drought stress is continuing in several areas of Oklahoma and northern Texas. But drought conditions have a strangle hold on the southern regions of Texas near Austin and San Antonio. Large areas of moderate to severe drought also continue in California and other western states.
