Cattle Feeding: Gain & feed conversion between steers & heifers of the same genetics

Q: What is the difference in rate of gain and feed conversion between steers and heifers of the same genetics? I would like a formula to price feeder calves with that in mind.

A: Generally heifers gain about 3 to 8% less and have 2 to 5 % poorer efficiency. However they are more prone to being affected by adverse weather and poor ration management. Death losses can also be different between steers and heifers. Also feeder heifers are generally not of comparable quality as feeder steers , since the better quality heifers are most often kept for replacements. Thus there is no exact answer
