Nebraska Man Denies Faking Cattle Inspection Reports

A former Nebraska cattle inspector has been ordered to stand trial on federal charges that he faked reports about mad cow disease.

Court documents filed in U.S. District Court in Omaha show 41-year-old Galen Niehues, of Cozad, pleaded not guilty Thursday to making false statements and mail fraud. A trial date was set for Feb. 7.

FY 2011 Ag Exports, Imports, & Trade Surplus Projected At Record Highs

Fiscal 2011 agricultural exports are forecast at a record $126.5 billion, up $13.5 billion from the August forecast and $17.8 billion above final 2010 exports. Exports are forecast to exceed the previous record set in 2008 by more than $11.5 billion. Sharply higher unit values for leading export commodities account for most of the forecast increase in value.

USDA Announces Intent To Establish Negotiated Rulemaking Committee For Changes To Livestock Mandatory Reporting

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) today announced its intent to establish a Wholesale Pork Reporting Negotiated Rulemaking Committee. The Committee will be charged with developing proposed language to amend the Livestock Mandatory Reporting regulations to implement mandatory pork price reporting.
