Compared to last week, feeder and stocker cattle prices were not fully tested on a very light pre-holiday offering as most marketing areas ceased operations after Tuesday in observance of Thanksgiving. USDA Announces Intent To Establish Negotiated Rulemaking Committee For Changes To Livestock Mandatory Reporting

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) today announced its intent to establish a Wholesale Pork Reporting Negotiated Rulemaking Committee. The Committee will be charged with developing proposed language to amend the Livestock Mandatory Reporting regulations to implement mandatory pork price reporting. U.S. Beef Export Market More Bullish Than Bearish

The U.S. beef export forecast for 2010 has been revised upward to 2.29 billion pounds. This export total is only 10 percent lower than the pre-BSE discovery record level in 2003 and demonstrates nearly 17 percent year-over-year growth. Third-quarter exports totaled 590 million pounds, 19 percent higher than yearearlier levels. ... Federally inspected cow slaughter is at its highest level in more than a decade, and this slaughter has been based on the lowest cow inventories since the early 1950s. The total quantity of beef produced per cow (January 1 inventories) in the United States has grown significantly over this same period from 310 pounds (1956) to 633 pounds (2009), as has both domestic and international demand for U.S. beef. ... Net sales of 561,800 MT were down 4 percent from the previous week. Increases were reported for unknown destinations (135,000 MT), Mexico (105,100 MT), Japan (85,700 MT), Ireland (62,200 MT, including 60,000 MT switched from unknown destinations), Syria (54,200 MT, switched from Egypt), Tunisia (46,700 MT), and Costa Rica (39,400 MT). ... Retail Beef Prices Decline, Ground Beef Up

The USDA released the latest retail meat prices for August on Friday. The report showed retail beef prices declined $0.035 falling to $3.944. Lean and extra lean ground beef prices increased by $0.063 to $3.574. Sirloin steak (Not choice or Prime) prices declined $0.098 falling to $4.833. ... Full story.
