Wisconsin State Veterinarian Dr. Bob Ehlenfeldt reminds veterinarians that the Code of Federal Regulations, of CFR, prohibits moving animals across state lines if they have tested positive for Johne’s disease on a PCR or culture.
There is an exception to the rule for animals going directly to slaughter, without unloading anywhere between the departure point and destination, or to an approved facility for sale to slaughter.
Ehlenfedlt encourages veterinarians to remember:
- For your regular clients, do not sign a certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI) for animals you know to be infected.
- If you are called on to sign a CVI for a herd you’re not familiar with, question the producer and ask to see the Johne’s test records before you sign the CVI.
