Profit Tips: Equipment - Basketball is a step-saver

Many grazing systems, such as rotational or management-intensive systems, require water tanks that provide easy access to adequate water. Managing such grazing systems means checking water tanks daily. Unfortunately, it’s not always practical for water tanks to be located near a perimeter fence where checking can be a drive-by chore. That means opening a gate and driving in to a paddock or, if the ground is muddy, walking across the paddock to check the tank. Fred Hale devised an easy way to visually confirm from a distance if his water tanks are, indeed, full of water. He placed a basketball in the tank that floats on top of the water. The basketball is easily visible from a distance and “saves many steps when checking out-of-the-way troughs,” Hale says.
