Opening and closing gates when entering a cattle pen is a tiresome chore, especially during times of peak activity such as calving season. South Dakota rancher James Hofer designed and installed an electric fence across the gate opening that allows a vehicle to enter, yet keeps the cows in place. Hofer says he installed an electric fence across the gate opening about 1 foot above the ground with a spring on one end to allow the wire to have flexibility. Now he just drives his pickup, ATV or tractor over the wire with no worries about the need to close the gate. “This saves me time and is especially handy at night.”
