Cattle and brush guards can save a lot of wear and tear on your truck but they can be expensive to buy. To save his truck and his money, Rod Peppel, manager of Martin Livestock in Quapaw, Okla., built his own.

"We took 2-inch by 2-inch angle iron and 4.5-inch channel iron and made our own design," writes Mr. Peppel. "It bolts on [to the frame] just the same as the bumper would."

To dress up the heavy-duty cow and brush guard, horseshoes were used to make the ranch's brand in the middle of the grill and it was painted black.
