Lack of vitamin A may become a problem for cows during the fall and winter after summer grazing on drought affected pasture or range. Cows typically get enough vitamin A by consuming green forage but dry or cured hay will lose some nutritional value in storage. If your cowherd is consuming forages in this category consult your veterinarian and ask if your cows would benefit from a vitamin A and D booster shot about 30 days prior to calving.

You may also consider testing your harvested hay to determine content. Feeding young hay that has maintained its green leaves may provide enough vitamin A.
