Cattle can be rough on round bale feeders. And while hay rings reduce wastage, they aren't cheap. Producer Randy Vorwaldt has made a round bale feeder that may well out last his cowherd. Paying scrap metal prices, Mr. Vorwaldt bought an old metal fuel tank measuring 16-feet long by 8-feet in diameter. After making sure there was no fuel or fumes remaining in the tank, he cut the cylinder into sections. Next, 17 holes were cut at angles to serve as feeding spaces for cattle. The heavy metal ring can not be moved by hand, so Mr. Vorwaldt must feed hay with a front-end loader. However, cows and bulls do not destroy or move his homemade feeders.
