After herding your cows into a large catch pen area, it’s often difficult to push them up into the smaller pens for sorting, especially if you’re short of help. Bill and Angie Grube of Franklin, Neb., use 1/2-inch wide flexible woven electric fence tape to help ease their cows through the gates.

A length of this polytape tied onto a gate post can aid in flanking a few head or a few hundred head. A small roll can easily be handled and extended to the length you need according to pen size and then rolled up as you go. While holding one end of the tape you can slowly walk the back of the herd up through the opening. Cows will keep their distance from the tape and the tape will eliminate escape points, simplifying what usually takes several people down to a one- or two-person job.
