Summer sunshine can be miserable for livestock that don’t have access to shade. Linda Prentiss found an inexpensive shade solution for her horses that she says could be beneficial for other livestock owners. Prentiss noticed a construction company was using canvass to block the unsightly view of the construction site. They gave her over 70 feet of the cloth free, which would cost $1.99 per foot new. She sewed two lengths together with a pocket at the top and bottom, into which she inserted a joint of PVC pipe. This fit between the uprights of her open-air horse barn. She hoists the shade up with a nylon rope. Prentiss says the shade helps keep the horse barn up to 12 degrees cooler, and the shade cloth does not block the breeze. She says the project took about two hours’ work to complete.
