To create his own crowding pen, Allen Powell, Laclede, Mo., used an old silo bin to round off the corner of the corral and installed a swinging gate to get cattle easily around the corner. He then bolted on some plastic sheeting to stop cattle from seeing any means of escape. This has stopped cows and calves from sticking their heads through the gate and pushing back on it. Although the white plastic covering works well, on his next gate, Mr. Powell says that he will use black sheeting to cut down on shadows that can distract cattle from moving forward.
