Provide the same salt and mineral supplementation during drought as during normal conditions. However, phosphorus, the element most likely to be limiting to cattle, will be even more critical in a drought year. A mixture of 50 percent trace mineralized salt and 50 percent dicalcium phosphate supplied free choice to the cowherd will meet this phosphorus requirement. Salt blocks, mineral blocks, and other forms of mineral supplementation often include instructions to place the block or mineral close to water. Close to water should be considered a relative term. A quarter of a mile is close enough. If placed too close, the combination of salt/mineral and water will serve to concentrate livestock near the water and create other problems. Use salt/mineral placement to enhance more even grazing distribution, not to concentrate it.
