Texas A&M AgLife Extension specialists offer these tips for protecting your property and livestock from wildfires.

  • Have a fire plan in place, including how to access and transport livestock that may be in danger.
  • Make sure you and employees have access to keys and every gate.
  • Set priorities for saving structures, livestock, machinery or feed.
  • If you have time to evacuate livestock, proceed with caution as some animals might refuse to leave, turn back or become dangerously agitated.
  • Install smoke detectors in barns and buildings, place fire extinguishers in barns, vehicles and tractors, and post emergency numbers near a telephone.
  • Clear firebreaks around vulnerable areas.
  • Use controlled burns during low-risk periods to produce “green strips” around the perimeter of pastures before wildfire season.
