Rotational grazing programs mean moving mineral feeders frequently. Doug Peterson built his own portable mineral feeders using old tires and a little hardware. The top of the tire is cut to allow the tub to sit down in the tire, and the tub is bolted to the tire at the bottom. A chain is attached to the tire so the feeders can be pulled to a new location with an ATV. Peterson says to “use tubs that are UV protected if you want them to last very long.” He also notes that a single feeder is not very stable when pulled with an ATV, but pulling two tires increases the stability of the feeders when being moved to a new location. Peterson has used the portable feeders in his operation for the past three years.
